Angela and Umesh Shankar's double-ceremony wedding at The Union Club in ...
When Strongsville native Angela (Occhionero) Shankar first visited her future in-laws’ home, then-boyfriend Umesh Shankar’s mother showed her the beautiful silk sarees she had hanging in her closet -- including the one she intended for Umesh’s future wife to wear on their wedding day.
“I thought, ‘Oh my gosh!’ “ Angela says. After all, they'd only been dating a few months.
But it seems her mother-in-law had the same intuition about the match that Angela did.
“I think we knew from our first date that this was it,” says Angela, who wore the red and gold silk saree when she wed Umesh last November in an Indian ceremony at The Union Club in Cleveland.
But that wasn’t the only dress she wore that day. While her 170 guests were sipping cocktails and enjoying appetizers, Angela quickly changed into a one-shoulder, lace and floral beaded wedding gown with a full skirt for a second ceremony.
“We really wanted to honor both sides of the family, but we didn’t want to put everybody through a marathon day, so we condensed each ceremony into 30 minutes or less and sandwiched them around a cocktail hour to keep everybody happy,” Angela says.
